The ESAT Biology Module: Eleven Topics, Four Blind Spots

The official ESAT Biology specification lists eleven topics. Revise in four blocks of cells, genetics, physiology and ecology and you cover about six of them; the other five never get opened. Marks are usually lost because the syllabus was drawn too small at the start, not because any single topic was too hard.
Biology is one of the optional ESAT modules: 40 minutes, 27 multiple choice questions, scored separately from everything else you sit. The specification also states something candidates routinely miss, which is that every module assumes knowledge of the content of Mathematics 1. Biology is no exception, so the real examinable range is eleven biology topics plus seven maths topics.
This page does four things: it lists all eleven topics, names the four that get skipped most often, sets out where the maths and the biology meet, and shows which courses actually need this module.

The eleven official topics are the syllabus

Appendix 1 of the official Content Specification, the version for assessment in October 2026 and January 2027, sets out Biology as eleven numbered topics:

The specification states that questions draw upon the topics listed for each module in Appendix 1, and that all modules assume knowledge of the content of Mathematics 1. Its table of assumed knowledge marks the Biology module as the B topics plus the M topics (Chemistry is C plus M, Physics is P plus M, Mathematics 2 is M plus MM). The genuine boundary for this module is therefore B1 to B11 plus the seven Mathematics 1 topics.
Copy that list out as eleven separate lines and hang your revision plan on it. Do not hang it on the contents page of a textbook. How a textbook groups and orders material is an editorial decision; the numbering in the specification is how the exam board has chosen to cut the subject up, and it is the only division that carries any weight on results day.

Revising in four blocks leaves nearly half the module untouched

The most common revision shortcut is to compress biology into four blocks: cells, genetics, physiology and ecology. Mapped onto the official codes, that covers roughly six topics: B1, B3, B4, B5, B9 and B10.
Five are left with nowhere to sit: B2 movement across membranes, B6 gene technologies, B7 variation, B8 enzymes and B11 plant physiology. Five of eleven, close to half the module, fall outside the frame entirely.
They are not offcuts, either. The board gave each of them its own code, at exactly the same level as inheritance and animal physiology. The specification lists the eleven side by side with no weighting attached and no indication that any of them matters less, so a claim that a particular topic 'hardly comes up' has nothing official behind it.
The fix is mechanical. Replace the four blocks with an eleven row checklist, three columns per row: notes done, timed practice done, errors logged. The real problem with the four block approach is not that it is wrong, it is that it hides what you have missed.

The four genuine blind spots: gene technologies, variation, plant physiology, membranes

Five topics fall outside the four block frame. B8 enzymes usually picks up partial cover inside cell biology and metabolism, which leaves four that tend to be complete blanks. Each of those four gets skipped for a different reason, and each needs a different fix.
B6 Gene technologies. In many school routes this sits in an extension or optional slot, so plenty of candidates have never studied it systematically at all. The specification gives it its own topic code, sitting alongside B5 DNA. It is the one most likely to be a complete blank, which is precisely why it belongs at the front of a revision plan rather than in the final fortnight.
B7 Variation. It usually gets two sentences inside a genetics lesson. The specification numbers it separately from B4 Inheritance, which tells you the board treats it as its own line of questioning rather than an appendix to genetics. Prepare it as a topic in its own right: sources and types of variation, and how variation connects to selection and adaptation.
B11 Plant physiology. Almost everyone revises B9 animal physiology, because it feels closer to medicine and therefore more important. B11 sits at the same level and is routinely the first thing dropped when time runs short. That is a scheduling failure, not a difficulty problem.
B2 Movement across membranes. It tends to get folded into cells and waved through. Separate numbering means it can be examined on its own, and it carries quantitative relationships naturally: concentration, gradient and rate lend themselves to a data set or a curve. It is also one of the biology topics that sits closest to Mathematics 1.
One caveat. The judgements above are made at topic level, and Appendix 1 of the specification is the only authoritative division of the subject. Tick off the detail against the official document itself and never against somebody's summarised version of it.

Biology assumes Mathematics 1, and here is where the two meet

The specification says it plainly: all modules assume knowledge of the content of Mathematics 1. That module is itself seven topics: units, number, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. Note what is absent. There is no trigonometry and no calculus; trigonometry, differentiation and integration all sit in the eight topics of Mathematics 2.
Inside Biology, the overlap worth drilling early concentrates in four places:
  • Ratio and probability in genetics. Inheritance (B4) and variation (B7) sit directly on top of M3 ratio and proportion and M7 probability. This is not extra maths bolted onto a biology question, it is how the biology question gets solved.
  • Statistics in ecology and data handling. Ecosystems (B10) involves sampling, population figures and comparison between treatments, which maps onto M6 statistics. You need to read what a data set is saying rather than recite a definition of it.
  • Rate, concentration and proportionality. Movement across membranes (B2) and enzymes (B8) both turn on rates, and the relationship between concentration and rate is proportional reasoning, which is M3 again.
  • Units and orders of magnitude. The specification expects familiarity with SI prefixes from nano to giga and with negative index notation for units. Cell dimensions, concentrations and metabolic rates all live here, and misreading one power of ten writes off the whole item.
One hard constraint sits underneath all of it: no calculator and no dictionary. The ESAT is computer based, the centre provides an erasable notebook and a pen for rough work, and you can raise your hand for fresh sheets at any point during the test. So what needs practising is mental arithmetic, cancelling and estimating to the right order of magnitude. Put the calculator away during revision too, or test day will feel considerably harder than your practice did.

Which courses need Biology, and the one that fixes it

Here is what the official 2027 entry Course List and Imperial's own admissions page set out:

The conclusion is blunt. On that list, Imperial Life Sciences is the only course that fixes Biology as compulsory, and it fixes Chemistry alongside it, so all three modules are set for you. Everything else above is a free choice of two, with Biology as one of four options. The remaining ESAT courses never reach Biology at all: Cambridge Engineering (H100), the Oxford engineering and physics courses, and Imperial Aeronautics, Civil and Environmental, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical and Physics all specify Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics; Chemical Engineering takes Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Chemistry; and Imperial's MEng Design Engineering (28G3) sits only two modules, Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2.
Biology is the conventional pick for a biological route through Cambridge Natural Sciences, for Veterinary Medicine and for Oxford Biomedical Sciences, but conventional is not the same as required. UCL EEE requires the ESAT from September 2027 entry (or September 2028 deferred entry) and the rules permit Biology as one of its two, although engineering applicants rarely have a good reason to take it.
Two rules catch people out:
  1. Module choices cannot be changed once booked without cancelling and rebooking the whole test. Check every target course page before you pay.
  2. If you apply to two or more courses that require the ESAT and one leaves the modules open while the other specifies them, your selection must follow the course that specifies. Register without the compulsory modules and your application to that course may be invalid.

In multiple choice form, Biology tests reasoning, not recall

Plenty of candidates approach Biology as a memory subject: learn the eleven topics, spot the keyword, pick the option. That assumption does not survive contact with the paper.
The specification says the test is designed to be challenging in order to differentiate effectively between able applicants, including those who might have achieved the highest possible grades in school examinations. Read that carefully. An item answerable by reciting a textbook line separates nobody, so the setters have no reason to write many of them. With 27 questions in 40 minutes there is no room for extended writing either; every mark is decided between the options.
So what should you actually practise? Three things.
Reading data and graphs. You are given results or a curve and asked which conclusion the data supports. The difficulty is rarely the biology. It is telling apart a conclusion the data supports from a statement that merely sounds true.
Causal and mechanistic reasoning. Change one condition and work out what happens downstream, for instance when a step in a pathway is blocked. This tests whether your understanding of the mechanism holds together, not whether you can quote its definition.
Elimination. No marks are deducted for incorrect answers and each correct answer scores one mark. Narrowing to two options and choosing still has positive expected value, and a blind guess always beats a blank.
Knowledge remains necessary. The distinction is that knowledge is the entry ticket, not the answer. After each topic, try explaining the causal chain aloud in your own words. Wherever the explanation breaks down is your weak point, and finding it that way is far more useful than rewriting the terminology again.

27 questions in 40 minutes, and why separate timing matters

That is just under 90 seconds per question. The number on its own is not brutal. What shapes strategy is the timing rule.
The specification states that each module is separately timed, and that if a candidate finishes a module early, the time will not be carried over to the next module. UAT-UK also confirms there are no breaks between modules or papers of your test. Most candidates sit three modules, which makes the whole test 120 minutes long.
Two consequences follow.
First, there is no such thing as banking time in Biology to rescue Mathematics 1. Time saved simply evaporates. Since it cannot be moved, spend all forty minutes inside Biology. With two minutes left, revisit the two items you were least sure about. There is never a reason to finish early.
Second, pacing has to happen within the module. A dependable approach is three passes. Pass one runs front to back, taking only what you can see immediately and flagging anything that stalls you. Pass two returns to the flagged items and works them properly. Pass three uses the last minute or two to fill every remaining blank, because with no negative marking a blank is a pure loss.
One thing candidates neglect: practise in blocks of forty minutes, not in sets of ten questions. Only a full block reproduces the fatigue and the drop in judgement that arrive two thirds of the way through, which is exactly where real sittings fall apart. People who drill in short sets often look fine in practice and lose marks the moment the block is timed end to end. Since there are no breaks between modules, run three blocks back to back at least once so that the stamina is not a surprise.
On logistics, arrive 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled sitting. You may be refused entry if you are more than 15 minutes late, and the fee is forfeited if that happens.

How the score works, and why nobody can give you a target

The scoring rules themselves are unambiguous:
  • You receive a separate score for each module you take, reported on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place.
  • There is no total. Three module scores are never combined into one figure.
  • Each correct answer scores one mark, no marks are deducted for incorrect answers, and results for each module are reported separately.
  • For the ESAT, each module is equated and scaled separately, which is what allows scores from different versions and sittings to sit on a single scale.
  • There is no pass mark. UAT-UK states that there is no pass/fail score for the ESAT and that scores are used alongside the rest of your application.
  • Score appeals are not accepted.
  • Results arrive roughly four weeks after the sitting. For 2027 entry that means 16 November 2026 for the October window and 8 February 2027 for January.
  • Results are matched to your UCAS application course by course and sent automatically to institutions whose course requires the test. Candidates cannot choose who sees a score.
So what counts as a good Biology score? There is no answer, and the absence is verifiable. UAT-UK publishes no grade boundaries or pass marks at all. Imperial is the only institution to have published department level scores and outcomes, that dashboard reports raw marks out of 27 rather than the 1 to 9 scaled score, and it covers Aeronautics, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental, Design Engineering, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical and Physics. It does not cover Life Sciences, the single department that requires Biology. Cambridge and Oxford publish nothing. Imperial also attaches its own warning to the figures: they are historic data, scores, distributions and outcomes vary from year to year, and they should not be taken as indicative of requirements or outcomes for current or future cycles.
There is therefore no public benchmark for this module. Whenever somebody quotes a Biology target, ask which year it came from, which scale it sits on, and who published it. During preparation only two measures are actually actionable: how many of the eleven topics you have genuinely covered, and your accuracy under a full timed block. Both are things you can measure yourself.

Booking, sittings and the fixed dates for mainland China

You may sit each UAT-UK test only once per admission cycle. The 2027 entry cycle includes both the October 2026 and the January 2027 sittings, so the two windows together are one attempt. Any attempt to register or sit a second time within the cycle is treated as misconduct, including booking under a second UAT-UK account. Imperial states on its own admissions page that only your first test score will be considered.
The windows are 12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027.
If you are sitting in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau, note the fixed days. The ESAT runs only on Monday 12 or Tuesday 13 October, and on Wednesday 6 January. It is not a free choice across the week. UAT-UK explains why: following reports in October 2024 of candidates attempting to obtain and sell test content without authorisation, the ESAT and TMUA are now offered on two days in October and one day in January in those three locations. Availability is therefore extremely tight and you should book the moment registration opens.
Choosing a window:
  • Cambridge and Oxford applicants will normally be required to sit in October. The exceptions are mature applicants applying to a Cambridge mature college with a January admissions deadline, and applicants to the Astrophoria Foundation Year at Oxford, both of which have January deadlines.
  • Applicants to other institutions can decide when to sit. UAT-UK states there is no advantage to either session, though the once per cycle rule still applies.
Booking (UK time): the October window opens 20 July 2026 at 15.00 and closes 28 September 2026 at 18.00. The January window opens 26 October 2026 at 15.00 and closes 21 December 2026 at 18.00.
Fees are £78 for candidates in the UK and Republic of Ireland and £133 elsewhere, determined by test centre location, not by your home or nationality.
One last item: account creation, access arrangements and bursary applications for 2027 entry all open on 1 June 2026 at 15.00 UK time, six weeks before booking opens for the October window. Access arrangements and bursaries are separate applications with their own processes, so anyone who needs either should confirm the relevant deadlines on the official site rather than leaving it until booking is about to close.

A revision sequence you can actually follow

Compressed into six steps.
One: write out the list. B1 to B11, eleven rows, three columns each: notes done, timed practice done, errors logged. That table is the dashboard for the whole revision plan, and gaps in it are visible at a glance.
Two: start with the blind spots. Gene technologies, variation, plant physiology and movement across membranes go first. The logic is simple. Those four are the likeliest to be a complete blank, and the cost of an unrevised topic always exceeds the gain from another pass over material you already know. Do not leave unseen content for the final fortnight.
Three: run the maths in parallel. Pull statistics, probability, ratio and proportion, units and the SI prefixes out of Mathematics 1 into their own thread and drill them alongside the biology rather than after it. No calculator at any stage of practice.
Four: time by module, not by question count. The unit of practice is a full forty minute block. Only a whole block exposes pacing problems and the decline in judgement that shows up late in a module.
Five: write out why the other options fail. For every question you get wrong, record why each remaining option does not hold rather than which one was right. This is the habit that builds the elimination skill described above, and it is the step most often skipped. Volume without review achieves very little.
Six: two points of discipline. UAT-UK states that it is not connected to, and does not endorse or promote, commercial preparation services, and that all necessary preparatory materials are available free of charge to all candidates. Official documents come first; anything else is supplementary. Second, you must not share or discuss the test with anyone after sitting it.
On older papers: UAT-UK makes historic ENGAA and NSAA papers available on its preparation page and flags the material in them that falls outside the current specification. They are usable for practice, but filter them against the current eleven topics before you start, so you do not spend a fortnight mastering content that is no longer examinable.

Cambridge Natural Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Chemical Engineering with Biotechnology, along with Oxford Biomedical Sciences, all specify Mathematics 1 plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, so Biology is one option out of four. For Cambridge Engineering, the Oxford engineering and physics courses and Imperial's engineering departments the modules are set as Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics (Chemistry in place of Physics for Chemical Engineering), so Biology never enters the picture. Only where the course leaves the choice open does your own strength in each subject come into it. Note also that if you apply to two courses requiring the ESAT and one specifies its modules, your selection must follow that course or the application to it may be invalid. Module choices cannot be changed without cancelling and rebooking.
How much maths does the Biology module need, and can I use a calculator?
No calculator and no dictionary are permitted. As for what counts as competitive, no public benchmark exists for the Biology module specifically. Imperial is the only institution to have published department level scores and outcomes; those figures are raw marks out of 27 and cover Aeronautics, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental, Design Engineering, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical and Physics, not Life Sciences, the one department that requires Biology, and Imperial notes they are historic data that should not be read as requirements for current or future cycles. I have finished A level or IGCSE Biology. Is that enough?
School courses and this module are two different maps, and they have to be compared line by line. Start by taking the eleven official topics and ticking off what you have actually studied, then look at the gaps. The four that go missing most often are gene technologies, variation, plant physiology and movement across membranes, because many school routes either place them in an optional slot or fold them into another unit and move on. Then understand the intent behind the paper: the specification states the test is designed to be challenging in order to differentiate effectively between able applicants, including those who might have achieved the highest possible grades in school examinations. Strong school performance is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one. Items answerable by reciting a textbook separate nobody, so what needs practising is data interpretation, mechanistic reasoning and elimination.
When can candidates in mainland China sit the ESAT? Is the whole week available?
No. The 2027 entry windows run 12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027, but in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau the ESAT is offered only on Monday 12 or Tuesday 13 October, and on Wednesday 6 January. UAT-UK explains the reason: following reports in October 2024 of candidates attempting to obtain and sell test content without authorisation, the ESAT and TMUA now run on two days in October and one day in January in those locations. Availability is very limited, so book as soon as registration opens. Booking runs from 20 July 2026 at 15.00 to 28 September 2026 at 18.00 UK time for October, and from 26 October 2026 at 15.00 to 21 December 2026 at 18.00 for January. Remember that you may sit only once per admission cycle, with the two windows counting as a single attempt.
I chose the wrong modules when booking. Can I change them?
Not directly. Module choices cannot be changed without cancelling and rebooking the test. Given that candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau only have two days in October and one in January to begin with, rebooking may not find you a seat, so check the requirements for every target course before you pay. There is a related rule people miss: if you apply to two or more courses that require the ESAT, and one has a free choice of modules while another lists compulsory ones, your selection must be dictated by the course with compulsory modules. If you do not register to sit those modules, your application to that course may be invalid.
