BMAT Past Papers (2003–2023)

Biomedical Admissions Test. The final BMAT sitting was in 2023, after which the test was withdrawn, so no new papers will ever appear. UAT-UK keeps the complete Section 1 archive (2003 to 2023) on its TARA preparation materials page, with answer keys. FrontierVUE hosts all 20 papers we hold, each sat online in a timed interface with worked solutions.

About this test

What the BMAT was, and why it still matters

The admissions test for medicine, biomedical sciences and dentistry, used by a number of UK universities. It is not a predecessor of the TARA: the TARA did not replace it, and the two serve different subject areas.

The BMAT had three sections: Section 1 tested thinking skills (problem solving and critical thinking) in 60 minutes; Section 2 tested scientific and mathematical knowledge; Section 3 was a writing task. Only Section 1 is relevant to the TARA, and it is the only part UAT-UK provides, so it is the only part held here. The number of questions in Section 1 changed over the years, so read the exact count for each paper from the table below.

OFFICIAL BASIS

Why UAT-UK lists these papers as TARA preparation

the Critical Thinking and Problem Solving components of the Test of Academic Reasoning (TARA) share a common history with the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) Section 1 and the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). On that basis, candidates wishing to access more preparation materials may find the BMAT papers below useful.
UAT-UK official TARA preparation materials page

That is the wording from UAT-UK's own TARA preparation materials page, unedited. UAT-UK hosts the BMAT archive and its answer keys on that same page. It does not mean official TARA past papers exist: UAT-UK has never released one, and this site does not call these papers TARA past papers.

WHY IT STILL WORKS

What BMAT papers do for your TARA preparation

This is not our assessment, it is the official position. On its TARA preparation materials page UAT-UK states that the TARA’s Critical Thinking and Problem Solving components share a common history with BMAT Section 1 and the TSA, and that candidates wanting more preparation material may find the BMAT papers useful.

The pacing lines up too. Each TARA module is 22 questions in 40 minutes, an average of about 1 minute 49 seconds per question; BMAT Section 1 ran to 60 minutes, which across the various question counts works out at roughly 1 minute 43 to 1 minute 53 each. The per-question time pressure is almost identical, so the archive trains the right clock as well as the right question types.

Module mapping

Which TARA module each BMAT part maps to

BMAT partTARA moduleWhy it maps
Section 1 · Problem SolvingProblem SolvingOne of the two components UAT-UK names as sharing a common history. You are given data or a scenario and have to construct a route to the answer with no method supplied.
Section 1 · Critical ThinkingCritical ThinkingThe other component. Identifying argument structure, finding assumptions, and judging what weakens or strengthens a conclusion, asked in much the same way as the TARA does.

This table describes continuity of content and question style, not an official equivalence. The TARA has its own specification, so always check the UAT-UK specification before you sit it.

Before you use this archive

Section 2 (scientific knowledge) and Section 3 (the writing task) have no bearing on the TARA, are not held here, and are not worth practising for it. The BMAT was also paper-based while the TARA is sat on screen at Pearson VUE, so the interface and feel have to come from TARA-format mocks instead. And the point that matters most: these are real BMAT papers, not TARA papers. UAT-UK has never released a TARA past paper.

WHY FRONTIERVUE

Sharper than a stack of PDFs

  • Exam-style pacing: the BMAT was a paper test and the TARA is sat on screen. Here every paper runs in a timed interface with instant marking, so there are no answer keys to check by hand.

  • Worked solutions: every question comes with a full solution, and mistakes can be saved to a review list for repeat practice.

  • Performance analytics: accuracy and timing are broken down by topic, so weak areas are visible rather than guessed at.

  • Complete by year: the whole BMAT archive is organised by year and paper, so you can sit a full timed paper or drill a single year.

  • Always current: for a year after purchase, new TARA papers and solutions are added at no extra cost; everything already unlocked stays available afterwards.

FAQ

FAQ

Is the BMAT still running?
The final BMAT sitting was in 2023, after which the test was withdrawn, so no new papers will ever appear. UAT-UK keeps the complete Section 1 archive (2003 to 2023) on its TARA preparation materials page, with answer keys.
Are BMAT past papers useful for TARA preparation?

How many BMAT past papers are on FrontierVUE?
20 papers, each sat online in a timed interface with worked solutions and performance analytics on submission. Registration is free, and every subject includes 2 free papers; for TARA those are the Frontier Original papers, because this archive is part of the paid bank.
Which TARA module should I practise with BMAT papers?
Section 1 · Problem Solving maps to TARA Problem Solving. Section 1 · Critical Thinking maps to TARA Critical Thinking. This reflects continuity of content and question style rather than an official equivalence, so check the UAT-UK specification for the definitive scope.
