Imperial Electrical & Electronic Engineering: ESAT for 2027 Entry
Imperial College London requires applicants to its Electrical and Electronic Engineering undergraduate courses to sit the ESAT for 2027 entry. 01 Imperial's Official Requirements
Imperial's official ESAT page (2027 entry) states: "You must take the ESAT if you're applying to our undergraduate courses in one of these departments", and Electrical and Electronic Engineering is one of them. The UAT-UK Course List 2027 phrases the requirement for these courses as "either the ESAT or the TMUA is compulsory". The test content is identical across all five courses. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every ESAT candidate, and the department specifies Mathematics 2 and Physics on top of it. Each module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, so the full sitting is three modules in 120 minutes, with each module reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale. Whether you apply for the BEng or MEng, EEE or EIE, you prepare for exactly the same paper.

02 Key Dates and Booking (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau)
The ESAT is run by UAT-UK and delivered through the Pearson VUE test-centre network. Imperial accepts scores from both test windows (12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027 overall), but for 2027 entry, candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau have fixed dates that are narrower than the general windows:
- Window 1: 12 or 13 October 2026 (the only dates available in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau), booking closes 28 September 2026, 18:00 UK time.
- Window 2: 6 January 2027 (the only date in these regions), booking closes 21 December 2026, 18:00 UK time.
Two hard rules to remember. First, Imperial only counts your first attempt in each application cycle, so a January sitting cannot replace an October score. Second, anyone also applying to Oxford or Cambridge must sit the October window. For most applicants targeting several top UK courses at once, 12 or 13 October 2026 is the only date that works, and your revision timeline should count back from it.

03 How to Prepare with FrontierVue
One thing first: the ESAT replaced the NSAA and ENGAA in 2024, and no official ESAT past papers have ever been published. 04 Special Notes for Imperial Applicants
Prepare as if you get one shot, because you do. Imperial only counts the first attempt in each cycle, unlike some universities that accept later scores. Do not plan to "test the water in October and improve in January": once an October score exists, a January sitting will not count for Imperial.
Oxbridge co-applicants have no choice of window. If you are also applying to Oxford or Cambridge, the October sitting is mandatory. In practice the January window only suits candidates applying to Imperial (and other universities that accept January scores) alone.
On the "ESAT or TMUA" wording. The UAT-UK Course List 2027 says "either the ESAT or the TMUA is compulsory" for these courses, while Imperial's own ESAT page says applicants to these departments must take the ESAT. For Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the ESAT's Mathematics 2 + Physics combination maps directly onto the course content; if you have a genuine reason to consider the TMUA route, confirm it with Imperial admissions before committing.
The deadline is earlier than you think. For mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, October booking closes on 28 September 2026 at 18:00 UK time, well ahead of the usual UCAS rhythm. Book your seat in the first week of September rather than cutting it close.
