Cambridge Economics: TMUA Requirements and Preparation
The University of Cambridge requires all applicants to BA Economics (UCAS code L100) to take the TMUA, the maths admissions test run by UAT-UK and delivered by Pearson VUE, for 2027 entry. The test is sat before interviews, and Cambridge is explicit that you must register in advance: Colleges use the result first to help decide who is shortlisted for interview, then alongside the rest of the application when deciding offers. This page sets out Cambridge's official position, the key dates (including the fixed sittings for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau), and a practical preparation route built on the FrontierVue question bank.

01 Cambridge's official requirement: compulsory for L100, sat pre-interview
For Cambridge's undergraduate Economics course, the TMUA is a hard requirement:
| Course | UCAS code | How the TMUA score is used |
|---|---|---|
| BA Economics | L100 | Compulsory, taken pre-interview; Cambridge states you must register in advance. Colleges use the result to help decide interview shortlisting, then alongside the rest of the application when deciding offers (cam.ac.uk admission tests page, 2027 entry) |
Two things are worth noting. First, the TMUA matters at two stages of the Cambridge process: it feeds into whether you are shortlisted for interview, and it is then weighed as part of the whole application at the offer stage, so it is not a simple pass-or-fail hurdle. Second, the official wording describes how the score is used but gives no numeric requirement, so any claimed "Cambridge cutoff" has no official basis. TMUA results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale, and the test itself has two papers: Paper 1 covers applications of mathematical knowledge and Paper 2 covers mathematical reasoning and logic, each with 20 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes, 150 minutes in total.

02 Key dates and registration: the October sitting, book by 28 Sep 2026
The TMUA has October and January sittings for 2027 entry, but for almost everyone applying to Cambridge L100 only the October sitting is relevant:
- Test window: 12-16 October 2026. Cambridge is explicit that applicants applying to the October deadline must take this sitting, and booking closes on 28 September 2026.
- Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on fixed dates: 15 or 16 October 2026.
- The January sitting (4-8 January 2027) is only for mature applicants applying in the January round; the fixed January date for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau is 8 January 2027. Standard applicants should not plan on the January sitting as a fallback.
Registration runs through UAT-UK and Pearson VUE. Book early, ideally by the start of September, rather than leaving it until just before the 28 September deadline. Working backwards, a mid-October test date means structured practice should begin over the summer; see our revision plan guide for a concrete schedule.

03 Preparing with FrontierVue: 18 past paper sets and 971 solved questions
Because Cambridge uses the TMUA at the shortlisting stage, your score needs to stand out among applicants rather than clear a fixed bar, and systematic past-paper practice is the most direct way to get there. TMUA resources on FrontierVue (figures reconciled against the production database, August 2026):
- 18 TMUA past paper sets spanning 2015 to 2023, including the official specimen; the two most recent sets are free to try;
- 10 mock paper sets, 971 TMUA questions in total, each with a detailed worked explanation and a Chinese translation, so a wrong answer becomes a lesson rather than a checkmark.
A sensible route: start with the exam overview and the syllabus guide to pin down the scope, then work paper by paper with the Paper 1 guide and Paper 2 guide. Proof and logic on Paper 2 is a common weak spot, so bring the logic and proof guide in early. In the practice phase, run past papers under timed conditions, use the time management guide to internalise the 3 minute 45 second per-question pace, and review against the common mistakes guide. In the final week, read the scoring guide and the test day guide to take procedural risk off the table.
04
04 Points specific to the Cambridge application
What sets Cambridge L100 apart from other TMUA universities is timing and purpose:
- The test happens before interviews, and the score first affects whether you are invited at all. That makes the TMUA one of the earliest hard checkpoints in the whole Cambridge application, so preparation cannot wait until after the UCAS form is in.
- "You must register in advance" is Cambridge's own wording. The university will not book the test for you, and missing the 28 September 2026 deadline is effectively unrecoverable for that cycle.
- No score threshold is published. Cambridge's position is that the result helps with shortlisting and is then considered alongside the whole application, so a higher score always carries marginal value, while the rest of your file (personal statement, predicted grades, interview) is never replaced by a single TMUA number.
- Dates for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are fixed (15 or 16 October 2026) with no choice of day, so plan school leave and travel around them.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the TMUA compulsory for Cambridge Economics (L100)?
Yes. For 2027 entry, all applicants to Cambridge BA Economics (L100) must take the TMUA before interviews, and Cambridge states you must register in advance. Colleges use the result to help decide interview shortlisting, then alongside the rest of the application when deciding offers.
I am in mainland China. Which TMUA sitting should I book for Cambridge Economics?
Book the October 2026 sitting. Cambridge requires October-deadline applicants to take this sitting (window 12-16 October 2026), and candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on the fixed dates of 15 or 16 October. Booking closes on 28 September 2026 via UAT-UK and Pearson VUE, so reserve a seat early.
What TMUA score do I need for Cambridge Economics?
Cambridge publishes no score threshold for L100. The official position is that the result helps with interview shortlisting and is then considered alongside the whole application. TMUA results run on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale, and with no official cutoff the sound strategy is simply to score as high as systematic past-paper practice allows.
What does the TMUA test, and how can I practise on FrontierVue?
The TMUA has two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes each: Paper 1 tests applications of mathematical knowledge, Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and logic. FrontierVue offers 18 TMUA past paper sets (2015 to 2023, including the official specimen), 10 mock sets and 971 questions in total, each with a detailed explanation and Chinese translation; the two most recent past paper sets are free to try.
