TMUA vs ESAT: The Course Decides, Not You

The TMUA and the ESAT are two admissions tests run by UAT-UK, and the one you sit is fixed by the course you apply to rather than by personal choice. TMUA covers mathematics, economics and computer science courses; ESAT covers engineering and the natural sciences. Both are computer-based multiple-choice tests delivered by Pearson VUE in the same test windows, yet their structure and score reporting differ sharply. This page lays out the differences that matter, and how to plan if your application spans both groups.

One System, Two Tests

Students often frame "TMUA or ESAT" as a decision to make. It is not: there is no choosing. Both tests sit under UAT-UK, the joint venture Imperial and Cambridge set up in 2023, both were first offered in October 2024, and both are computer-based multiple-choice tests run through Pearson VUE. The only fork is the subject direction of the course you apply to.

Sharing an owner does not mean sharing a design. The TMUA is a single mathematics test that every candidate sits in identical form; the ESAT is assembled from modules, and your course dictates which ones you take. Here is the structure, side by side.

Both are computer-based multiple-choice tests at Pearson VUE centres; scores are sent automatically via UCAS matching to every applied-to institution that requires the test, and candidates cannot choose who sees them.

Read the scores on their own terms. The TMUA total is anchored to the October cohort, with the median fixed at 4.5 and roughly 10% of candidates above 7.0; the ESAT reports each module from 1 to 9. UAT-UK publishes no grade boundaries, sets no pass mark, and does not accept score appeals.

Who Uses Which: Universities and Courses

Seven universities use UAT-UK tests for 2027 entry: the TMUA across 60 courses, the ESAT across 56. Four of the seven (Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge and UCL) use both, split by department: at Imperial, Computing and Mathematics require the TMUA while Physics and most Engineering degrees require the ESAT. Oxford: MAT ends, TMUA takes over from 2026

Oxford's Mathematical Institute states: 'From 2026, Oxford will use the TMUA. The MAT will not take place, and all applicants for Mathematics or Computer Science (including joint honours courses) will take the TMUA instead.' The MAT ran from 2007 to 2025, so treat older MAT-era advice as historical.

Cambridge Maths: a new TMUA filter for 2027 entry

The Cambridge Maths faculty now requires every applicant to sit the TMUA as a preliminary assessment before interview invitations, in the October sitting (registration closes 28 September 2026). Officially it screens out applications unlikely to be competitive rather than picking winners; historically 75% to 80% of applicants have been invited to interview. STEP remains the offer condition, with a typical offer asking grade 1 in both STEP 2 and STEP 3.

ESAT and the NSAA/ENGAA: an evidence chain

No official page literally says 'the ESAT replaces the NSAA and ENGAA', but the chain of evidence is unambiguous: on 10 November 2022 CAAT announced its withdrawal from tests including the BMAT, ENGAA, NSAA and TMUA from the 2024-5 cycle; Imperial and Cambridge then announced their joint venture and the ESAT on 18 January 2024; and Cambridge's Natural Sciences course page moved from requiring the NSAA for 2023 entry to requiring the ESAT for 2025 entry.

Durham: the TMUA is optional but rewarded

Durham's maths courses (G100, G103, G111, G114) treat the TMUA as an optional test that applicants are strongly encouraged to sit: a high enough score may earn a reduced offer, and STEP can serve in its place. That is a different animal from the compulsory requirements at Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial.

Timeline: One Track, Two Tests

Both tests share the same two windows and the same booking deadlines, which simplifies planning: there is only one track to watch. Window 1 booking closes on 28 September 2026, and Oxford and Cambridge applicants are expected to sit in October.

Applying Across Both Groups

If your application list spans both groups, say Oxford Maths plus Cambridge Engineering, you sit both tests. Helpfully, the test days inside each window do not clash: in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, window 1 puts the ESAT on 12 and 13 October 2026 and the TMUA on 15 and 16 October. Frequently asked questions

Can I choose whether to sit the TMUA or the ESAT?

No. The requirement is set by the course: mathematics, economics and computer science courses use the TMUA, while engineering and natural science courses use the ESAT. Departments within the same university can require different tests, so the only reliable method is checking each course against the university's own pages or the UAT-UK Course List.

Might I need to sit both tests?

Yes. An application list spanning both groups, such as Cambridge Engineering plus Oxford Maths, means sitting both. The tests share the same windows but run on different days: in China, Hong Kong and Macau, window 1 schedules the ESAT on 12 and 13 October 2026 and the TMUA on 15 and 16 October, so the dates do not clash, though you pay two fees and prepare on two tracks.

Are there official ESAT past papers to practise with?

The ESAT only launched in October 2024, so the stock of official past papers is thin. Its predecessors in the Cambridge system were the NSAA and the ENGAA (the official evidence chain is set out above), and our library offers 31 archive papers from those tests (2015 to 2023, clearly labelled as predecessor archives rather than official ESAT papers) plus 26 original mocks, 2,345 questions in all, starting at /papers/esat.

Can TMUA and ESAT scores be compared with each other?

Not directly. Both use a 1 to 9 scale, but they report differently: the TMUA gives one overall score anchored to the October cohort (median 4.5, about 10% of candidates above 7.0), while the ESAT scores each module separately. UAT-UK publishes no grade boundaries and no pass mark. Note too that TMUA scores from 2024 onwards cannot be compared with pre-2024 scores on the old scale.
