Oxford Computer Science Degrees: TMUA Guide for 2027 Entry

Every applicant to the University of Oxford's undergraduate Computer Science degrees for 2027 entry must sit the TMUA, the mathematics admissions test run by UAT-UK and delivered by Pearson VUE. The requirement covers all three courses: Computer Science (G400), Computer Science and Philosophy (IV15), and Mathematics and Computer Science (GG14). Oxford only accepts scores from the October sitting, and TMUA results feed directly into shortlisting for interview. This page collects the official requirements, the key dates and a practical preparation route in one place.

01

01 Oxford's Official Requirements: Compulsory for All Three Courses

Computer Science

G400

Compulsory. The Department of Computer Science uses TMUA scores to decide who to shortlist for interview

Computer Science and Philosophy

IV15

Compulsory. Same policy as G400: TMUA scores are used for shortlisting

Mathematics and Computer Science

GG14

Compulsory, October sitting only; the score is considered alongside the rest of the UCAS application when deciding shortlisting

The official wording for the 2026 admissions round (2027 entry) is clear. Oxford's Department of Computer Science (cs.ox.ac.uk) states that all applicants for Maths, Computer Science or the joint honours courses must take the TMUA, and that the department will use TMUA scores to decide who to shortlist. For GG14, the Mathematical Institute (maths.ox.ac.uk) states that candidates must register for the TMUA and take it in the October sitting (12 to 16 October 2026), with the score used together with the rest of the UCAS application to decide shortlisting for interview.
Note that the official wording quoted here only describes how scores are used for shortlisting; it does not publish a fixed cut-off, so treat any "threshold" figure from unofficial sources with caution.

02 Key Dates and Registration: Oxford Accepts the October Sitting Only

Start with the rule that matters most: the 2027 entry cycle has two TMUA sittings, October and January, but Oxford accepts October scores only for all three courses (G400, IV15 and GG14). If you are applying to Oxford, you must sit in October; a January score will not count for your Oxford application.

Registration and booking are handled through UAT-UK and Pearson VUE. Format: two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each, 75 minutes per paper and 150 minutes in total; Paper 1 tests applications of mathematical knowledge, Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and logic; results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale. 03 How to Prepare with FrontierVUE

FrontierVUE's TMUA question bank currently offers 18 past paper sets (2015 to 2023, including the official specimen) and 10 mock sets, 971 questions in total, each with a detailed explanation and a Chinese translation. The two most recent past papers are free to try. Below is the route we suggest for Oxford's October sitting.
01Step 1

Tell the two papers apart, then start with logic and proof

Read the Paper 1 guide and the Paper 2 guide to understand how the two papers differ; the logic and proof guide covers the part of Paper 2 most candidates find least familiar, so start there.
02Step 2

Take a timed diagnostic with the free papers

Take a timed diagnostic with the free papers at the practice hub, then use the common mistakes guide to pin down weak spots.
03Step 3

Work through the papers in stages and drill the pace

Work through the past papers and mocks in stages following the revision plan, drill the 20-questions-in-75-minutes pace with the time management guide, and read the test day guide in the final week to get comfortable with the Pearson VUE computer-based format.
With the test in mid-October 2026 and booking closing on 28 September, the real preparation window is the summer and early autumn, so start timed practice early.

04 What Changes for 2027: MAT Discontinued, TMUA Takes Over

Oxford's Department of Computer Science (cs.ox.ac.uk) states that from the 2026 admissions round (2027 entry) the MAT has been discontinued and all applicants take the TMUA instead. For candidates applying to G400, IV15 or GG14, that means the three things below.
Do not prepare for the MAT based on past years' advice
The admissions test for 2027 entry is the TMUA, and it must be the October sitting.
The format changed; the demand for rigour did not
Both TMUA papers are multiple choice, but Paper 2 is dedicated to mathematical reasoning and logic, so the demand for rigorous thinking has not gone away. The logic and proof guide is the best starting point for this material.
Base your preparation on the TMUA specification and past papers
The syllabus guide sets out what each paper covers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to take the MAT for Oxford Computer Science (G400)?
No. Oxford's Department of Computer Science states that from the 2026 admissions round (2027 entry) the MAT has been discontinued, and all applicants for Maths, Computer Science and the joint honours courses must take the TMUA instead. This applies to G400, IV15 and GG14 alike.
Does Oxford accept the January 2027 TMUA sitting, and when do I sit in mainland China?
No, Oxford only accepts the October sitting. The October test window for 2027 entry runs from 12 to 16 October 2026, and candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on the fixed dates of 15 to 16 October 2026. Register via UAT-UK and Pearson VUE during the booking window of 20 July to 28 September 2026.
Are the TMUA requirements for Oxford Mathematics and Computer Science (GG14) the same as for G400?
The core requirements are the same: like G400, GG14 requires the TMUA, only the October sitting counts, and scores are used for shortlisting. For GG14, Oxford's Mathematical Institute additionally states that the TMUA score is considered together with the rest of the UCAS application when deciding who to invite to interview.
What does the TMUA test, how long is it, and how is it scored?
The TMUA is run by UAT-UK and delivered as a computer-based test by Pearson VUE. It has two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each, 75 minutes per paper and 150 minutes in total: Paper 1 tests applications of mathematical knowledge, Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and logic. Results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale, and Oxford uses them to shortlist Computer Science applicants for interview.
