How to read the numbers

STEP is the opposite of the ESAT and TMUA in one important way: its grade boundaries are published every year, on results day. This calculator uses the published 2026 boundaries, the latest series: grade 1 fell at 62/120 on STEP 2 and 56/120 on STEP 3. Your grade is based on your six best answers at 20 marks each. Boundaries are set each year with reference to cohort performance and the intake of the universities that use STEP, so they move: treat 2026 as a reference point, not a promise.

What mark do I need for grade 1 in STEP?
In the 2026 series, grade 1 required 62/120 on STEP 2 and 56/120 on STEP 3, reached by 28.14% and 35.73% of candidates respectively. Boundaries move each year and are published by OCR on results day.
What STEP grades does a Cambridge offer ask for?
Cambridge states the minimum offer level for Mathematics is grade 1 in both STEP 2 and STEP 3; exact grades vary by College, so check the College you are applying to.
How many questions should I attempt?
Everything you attempt is marked, but only your six best answers count towards the 120. OCR advises against attempting more than six, so if a question stalls you can simply move on.
