Imperial College London Economics, Finance and Data Science: TMUA Guide

Applicants to Imperial College London's BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science (UCAS code L1N3) for 2027 entry must sit the TMUA admissions test. This is a hard requirement for the Business School's interdisciplinary degree: Imperial's official policy lists the TMUA as compulsory for this course, alongside undergraduate courses in Computing and Mathematics. This page covers the official requirement, the two 2027 entry test windows, the fixed dates for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, the booking deadlines, and a practical preparation route on FrontierVUE.

01 Imperial's official requirement: the TMUA is compulsory

Imperial's official TMUA page for 2027 entry (imperial.ac.uk) is unambiguous: the TMUA is required for applicants to undergraduate courses in the Department of Computing (including joint Mathematics and Computer Science), the Department of Mathematics, and the Business School's BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science. In the university's own words: "You must take the TMUA if you are applying to our undergraduate courses in: Department of Computing (incl. joint Mathematics and Computer Science), Department of Mathematics, BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science (Business School)".

Two rules to keep front of mind:
  1. Imperial only considers your first TMUA result in each application cycle. If you sit in October and book January as well, the second score will not be used, so treat your first sitting as your only shot.
  2. Applicants who are also applying to Oxford or Cambridge must take the October sitting.

A suggested three-step route is set out below; the guides and entry points it uses are the syllabus guide, the revision plan, the TMUA practice hub, the time management guide and the common mistakes guide.
01Step 1

Start with the syllabus and revision plan, working back from your sitting

Read the syllabus guide and the revision plan first, working backwards from your October or January sitting.
02Step 2

Drill full papers under timed conditions, starting free

Go to the TMUA practice hub and drill full papers under timed conditions, starting with the free past papers and keeping Paper 1 and Paper 2 to 75 minutes each.
03Step 3

Review mistakes, with a focus on logic and proof in Paper 2

Review your mistakes with the time management and common mistakes guides, paying particular attention to logic and proof in Paper 2.
Because Imperial only uses your first result, mock exams matter more than usual here: rehearse the full 150-minute rhythm with mock papers before test day rather than experiencing it for the first time in the exam room.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take the TMUA for Imperial's Economics, Finance and Data Science (L1N3)?
Yes. Imperial's official 2027 entry policy lists the Business School's BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science among the courses for which the TMUA is compulsory, alongside its undergraduate courses in Computing and Mathematics. Without a TMUA result, an application to this course is incomplete.
Which TMUA sitting does Imperial accept? Can I retake in January if October goes badly?
Imperial accepts both the October 2026 and January 2027 sittings, but it only considers your first result in each application cycle. If you sit in October and again in January, the second score will not be used, so prepare as if your first sitting is your only chance.
I am taking the TMUA in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau. What are my test dates?
Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on fixed dates: 15 to 16 October 2026 for the October window and 8 January 2027 for the January window. Booking closes on 28 September 2026 and 21 December 2026 respectively, and registration is via UAT-UK / Pearson VUE.
I am also applying to Oxford or Cambridge. Which TMUA sitting should I book?
The October sitting. Imperial's guidance states that applicants who are also applying to Oxford or Cambridge must take the TMUA in October; for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau the fixed dates are 15 to 16 October 2026.
