LSE Economics Degrees: TMUA Requirements for 2027 Entry

For 2027 entry, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has set clear TMUA rules for its economics degrees: the test is mandatory for BSc Economics and BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, and officially encouraged for BSc Economics and Data Science. TMUA is run by UAT-UK and delivered by Pearson VUE: two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions, 75 minutes each (150 minutes in total), reported on a 1.0-9.0 scale. This page brings together LSE's official requirements, the key dates (including the fixed dates for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau), and a practical preparation route.

01 LSE's Official Requirements: Mandatory vs Encouraged

LSE's official Entry Requirements page (2027 entry) draws a clean line between the three economics degrees: two of them require every applicant to sit the TMUA, while for the third the test is officially encouraged.

L101 · BSc Economics

Mandatory for all applicants, 2027 entry

Not a bonus but a condition of applying

L140 · BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics

Mandatory for all applicants, 2027 entry

Same rule as L101: LSE states that all applicants are required to take the test

L1N3 · BSc Economics and Data Science

Encouraged, not required

Official wording: a good score may make an application more competitive

For L101 and L140, the TMUA is not a bonus but a condition of applying: LSE states that "all applicants are required to take the test" (LSE Entry Requirements, 2027 entry). For L1N3 the test is optional, but LSE's own wording encourages applicants to sit it, noting that a good score may strengthen an application.
One caveat: the official LSE wording we cite contains no numeric score threshold, and we will not invent one. Always check the LSE Entry Requirements page directly.

02 Key Dates and Registration: Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau

For 2027 entry there are two TMUA sittings: October 2026 and January 2027, with registration going through UAT-UK / Pearson VUE. Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on fixed dates. The timeline below puts the registration deadlines, the global test windows and those fixed dates side by side.

Global October window
12-16 Oct 2026
The global test window runs 12-16 October 2026, and LSE accepts a score from this sitting.

The fixed October dates for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau: 15-16 October 2026.
January registration closes
21 Dec 2026
After the October deadline passes, registration for the January sitting stays open until 21 December 2026.
Global January window
4-8 Jan 2027
The global test window runs 4-8 January 2027. Either sitting is accepted: LSE takes a score from whichever one you sit.
Jan · China/HK/Macau
8 Jan 2027
The fixed January date for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau: 8 January 2027.
Hard deadline Event WindowRegistration goes through UAT-UK / Pearson VUE; the two registration deadlines and the sitting policy come from LSE's official TMUA guidance page.
Only your first attempt in each cycle counts. If you sit the test twice in the same application cycle, LSE will not use the second result. There is no "trial run in October, retake in January" strategy. This too comes from LSE's official TMUA guidance page.

03 How to Prepare with FrontierVUE

FrontierVUE's TMUA library currently holds 18 past paper sets (2015-2023, including the official specimen), 10 mock sets, and 971 questions in total, each with a detailed explanation and a Chinese translation; the two most recent past paper sets are free to try.

Start at the TMUA practice hub, and see the TMUA exam overview for how the test works. The three-step route below is our own recommendation, not an official requirement from LSE or UAT-UK.
01Step 1

Set a baseline

Read the syllabus guide to map your gaps, then use the revision plan guide to work backwards from your chosen sitting.
02Step 2

Attack each paper separately

The Paper 1 guide and Paper 2 guide break down how each paper is examined, and the logic and proof guide goes deeper on Paper 2's reasoning question types.
03Step 3

Timed full papers

In the final stretch, sit full past papers and mocks under timed conditions, using the time management guide and the common mistakes guide to fix habits; before test day, read the scoring guide and the test day guide.
Step 3 matters most for LSE applicants: because LSE only counts your first attempt in each cycle, timed full-paper practice is how you make that first attempt your best one.
04

04 What LSE Applicants Should Watch For

Your first sitting is your only sitting (within a cycle)
Because LSE uses only your first TMUA attempt in each application cycle, the usual "sit October to get a feel, retake in January" plan does not exist here. Register for October only if you expect to be at your best by 15-16 October 2026.
October or January: our recommendation
If your revision is clearly short before October, targeting the 8 January 2027 sitting (registration closes 21 December 2026) is the sounder call. That is our recommendation, not an LSE requirement: officially, LSE accepts either sitting.
The L1N3 trade-off
BSc Economics and Data Science (L1N3) does not require the TMUA, but LSE's official wording is clear that a good score may make an application more competitive. If you are also applying to L101 or L140 you must sit the test anyway, and the same score supports your L1N3 application; if L1N3 is your only LSE choice, the decision comes down to your mathematical readiness and time budget.
Do not project LSE's rules onto other universities. Which sittings are accepted, whether only the first attempt counts, and registration deadlines all vary by university; this page covers LSE's economics degrees (L101, L140 and L1N3) only.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the TMUA compulsory for LSE BSc Economics (L101)?
Yes. LSE's official Entry Requirements make the TMUA mandatory for all applicants to BSc Economics (L101) and BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (L140) for 2027 entry. Note too that LSE uses only your first TMUA attempt in each application cycle.
Does LSE accept the October or January TMUA sitting? Can I sit twice and keep the higher score?
LSE accepts either sitting, but only your first attempt in each application cycle counts, so there is no sitting twice and keeping the higher score. Pick your sitting, then prepare for it as your one and only chance, with timed full-paper practice.
I am in mainland China. When do I sit the TMUA for LSE, and how do I register?
Candidates in mainland China (and Hong Kong and Macau) sit on fixed dates: 15-16 October 2026 or 8 January 2027, registering via UAT-UK / Pearson VUE. Per LSE's official TMUA guidance, registration closes on 28 September 2026 for the October sitting and 21 December 2026 for January.
Is the TMUA also mandatory for LSE BSc Economics and Data Science (L1N3)?
No. For 2027 entry, LSE's official position on L1N3 is that applicants are encouraged to take the test, and a good score may make an application more competitive. If your maths is solid and you have the prep time, a strong score is a genuine advantage for L1N3.
