Cambridge ESAT by College

Average ESAT scores for Cambridge Engineering across all 29 colleges in the 2025 cycle, applicants against offer holders, plus the Home and International split.

Average Mathematics 1 score by college · offer holders · 2025 cycle

Grey bars are mature colleges (21+ only): tiny cohorts, averages swing wildly. The FOI release does not include per-college applicant counts, and Cambridge notes some applicants move between colleges mid-cycle. Averages are not cut-offs.

ABOUT

How to read the numbers

Cambridge never volunteers ESAT statistics, but two Freedom of Information responses released the 2025-cycle data for Engineering H100: FOI-2025-956 gives per-module averages for all 29 colleges (applicants and offer holders), and FOI-2025-982 splits Home from International. The single most striking number for overseas applicants: International offer holders averaged 7.41 on Mathematics 1 against 5.67 for Home, with every module gapped by 1.4 points or more. Three notes on the figures: these are averages, not cut-offs; the FOI release contains no per-college applicant counts, and mature colleges have tiny cohorts; Cambridge notes that some applicants move between colleges mid-cycle. For the full written analysis of this dataset (how far apart applicants and offer holders sit, how to read the college spread, and how to set a practice target), see the Cambridge ESAT scores guide.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this data official?
Yes. It comes from the University of Cambridge Information Compliance Office responses to FOI-2025-956 (17 October 2025) and FOI-2025-982 (3 November 2025), published on WhatDoTheyKnow; the figures here match the original documents item for item.
Should college differences drive my college choice?
With great care. The release has no per-college applicant counts, so one or two extreme scores can move a small college's average; mature colleges (Hughes Hall, St Edmund's, Wolfson, Lucy Cavendish) admit only students aged 21+, an incomparable pool. College differences mostly reflect applicant self-selection, not different marking standards.
Which number should an applicant from China benchmark against?
The International offer-holder column: 7.41 on Mathematics 1, 7.20 on Physics and 7.21 on Mathematics 2. Against the official distribution anchors (typical candidate around 4.5, roughly 10% above 7.0), the average international offer holder sits near the national top 10%.
