Christ's College ESAT scores for Cambridge Engineering

In the 2025 admissions cycle, applicants who received an Engineering (H100) offer from Christ's College, Cambridge averaged 7.05 on ESAT Mathematics 1, 2nd among the 25 undergraduate colleges and just behind the pool's top offer average of 7.08. The same group averaged 6.6 on Physics (7th) and 6.42 on Mathematics 2 (8th). All three offer averages sit above the pool median, but by very different margins: 0.69 above on Mathematics 1, 0.13 on Physics and 0.2 on Mathematics 2, a spread of 0.63 that leans firmly towards Mathematics 1. The whole applicant field, by contrast, averaged 5, 4.79 and 5.03, almost level, so the gap between modules opened only on the offer side. These are cycle averages, not entry requirements; Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold of any kind.

These are averages and extremes for applicants and offer-holders at this college in the 2025 Engineering (H100) cycle, not entry requirements; Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold. The FOI response gives no applicant counts per college, so sample sizes are unknown and a handful of candidates can move an average. Ranks are computed within the undergraduate college pool only, and are not comparable with the mature colleges, which admit applicants aged 21 and over. ESAT results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale to one decimal place. Pool ranks, pool medians, the overall three-module averages and the various gaps are calculated by FrontierVUE from the same response; Cambridge publishes no such rankings. FrontierVUE is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the University of Cambridge or any of its colleges.

What Christ's ESAT numbers actually are

The University's official Freedom of Information response FOI-2025-956 lists ESAT scores for Engineering (H100) applicants and offer-holders, college by college, for the 2025 admissions cycle. For Christ's, the first thing to notice is how the shape changes between the two columns. The whole applicant field averaged 5, 4.79 and 5.03 across the three modules, almost level with one another; the offer column reads 7.05, 6.6 and 6.42, with Mathematics 1 pulling clear. ESAT results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale to one decimal place, so every figure below sits on that scale. Both columns are grouped by the college applied to in that cycle, and the University notes that some applicants change college or course part-way through.
Applicant averageApplicant rangeOffer-holder averageOffer-holder range
Mathematics 151 to 97.054.2 to 9
Physics4.791.3 to 96.65.2 to 9
Mathematics 25.031.1 to 96.424.4 to 9

The averages and the lowest and highest scores in the table come line by line from official response FOI-2025-956; the overall three-module averages of 4.94 and 6.69 are calculated by FrontierVUE from that same response. The ranges are the lowest and highest score in each group, not boundaries.

7.05

Mathematics 1 offer average, 2nd of the 25 undergraduate colleges

2.05

Mathematics 1 gap from the applicant average of 5 to the offer average, the largest of the three

0.63

Spread between the three offer averages, highest on Mathematics 1 and lowest on Mathematics 2

6.69

Offer average across all three modules (applicants: 4.94)

Among offer-holders the lowest scores were 4.2 on Mathematics 1, 5.2 on Physics and 4.4 on Mathematics 2, and the highest score on all three modules was 9. Physics is worth a second look: its offer average of 6.6 is not the highest of the three, yet its floor of 5.2 is, so Christ's offer group that year contained no Physics score in the fours. This is still one year and one group of people, not a line drawn anywhere; Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold.

How to read these numbers

7.05 is an average, not an entry requirement
It is the average Mathematics 1 score of Christ's Engineering offer-holders in the 2025 cycle. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold, and no college has published a minimum of its own. Within that same group, actual Mathematics 1 scores run from 4.2 to 9; the average marks the centre of that spread, not its entrance. The accurate phrasing is that offer-holders averaged 7.05 that year, not that 7.05 is what you need.
No applicant counts, so small samples move around
Response FOI-2025-956 gives averages and extremes only, with no applicant count or offer count for any college. Colleges differ a great deal in size, and where the group is small a few unusually high or low scores can shift the average noticeably. The distance between 2nd and 7th place is therefore something to read for direction, not a stable baseline to track year on year.
Mature colleges do not belong in the same ranking
Hughes Hall, St Edmund's, Wolfson and Lucy Cavendish admit only applicants aged 21 and over, so their applicant pool is a different population. Every rank on this page is computed inside the undergraduate pool of 25 colleges, which is where Christ's sits. Ranking across the two pools would be meaningless and is not attempted here.
Some candidates changed college or course mid-cycle
The response notes that some applicants move between colleges or courses during the cycle, with figures grouped by the year of application. The group counted under Christ's is therefore not necessarily identical to the people who end up reading Engineering there. That does not change the trend, but it does mean these are not an exact roll-call.
One line to hold on to: this page answers what people who applied to Christ's scored last cycle, not what you must score. The 2nd place on Mathematics 1 is worth letting into how you split your time; it should not be translated into a number you have to hit. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold of any kind.
To place Christ's alongside every other college, there is a separate cross-college piece on this site: Cambridge ESAT scores by college, which carries the comparison and the interactive charts for all 29 colleges. This page goes deep on one college and does not repeat that material.

Overall position

All three modules above the pool median

Offer-holders averaged 6.69 overall, the whole applicant field 4.94

Put together, the shape of Christ's is clear. First, Mathematics 1 is the college's centre of gravity: an offer average of 7.05 ranks 2nd of 25, in a pool that tops out at 7.08, and the 2.05 climb from the applicant average of 5 is the largest of the three gaps, so Mathematics 1 was the module that separated applicants from offer-holders most sharply at Christ's that cycle. Second, Physics and Mathematics 2 are not weak: 6.6 and 6.42 both sit above the pool median, only by smaller margins, in 7th and 8th place. Third, Mathematics 2 has the highest applicant average of the three at 5.03 yet the lowest offer average, and the smallest gap at 1.39. That does not make Mathematics 2 unimportant; it means a mark carries a different amount of information depending on the module.

Preparing with Christ's shape in mind

The sequence below follows from the shape above. It is not official advice, and not a line anyone has drawn for you. It rests on one premise: practice time across the three ESAT modules never had to be split evenly, and Christ's, with a 0.63 spread and a 2nd place on Mathematics 1, states its priorities fairly plainly.
01Step one

Put Mathematics 1 on the main line

Christ's offer group averaged 7.05 here, 2nd in the pool, with the largest gap of the three at 2.05. Get Mathematics 1 fast and steady first, then talk about gains elsewhere.

02Step two

Keep Physics and Mathematics 2 out of the secondary pile

6.6 and 6.42 both sit above the pool median, in 7th and 8th place, and the Physics offer floor of 5.2 is the highest of the three. They are simply less prominent than Mathematics 1, not modules that can be scaled back.

03Step three

Take your own baseline, module by module

Sit a timed paper from the past paper list at /papers/esat and record accuracy and timing for each module separately. The college's shape sets the order; your own weakest module sets the volume. Do not confuse the two.

04Step four

Reassemble the three modules under full timing

After module drills, sit the paper whole and timed. Christ's combined offer average of 6.69 comes from none of the three collapsing, not from one spike. The 0.63 spread orders your priorities; it is not a reason to drop a module.

Where practice weight goes for Christ's profile

Priorities inferred from the 2025 offer-group distribution, not an official requirement

Mathematics 1 (2nd, 7.05)0.69 above the 6.36 pool median, with the largest gap at 2.05
  • Mid-to-hard algebra, functions and geometry as the standing workload
  • File errors by topic, not by which paper they came from
  • Under timing, protect this run first and leave no half-attempted items
Physics (7th, 6.6)0.13 above the 6.47 pool median, with the highest offer floor of the three at 5.2
  • Make mechanics and circuits collapse-proof before chasing harder items
  • Keep one mixed set a week so practice does not circle the comfortable types
Mathematics 2 (8th, 6.42)0.2 above the 6.22 pool median, with the smallest gap at 1.39
  • Target accuracy and speed, clearing arithmetic slips first
  • Once steady, drop to maintenance and return the time to Mathematics 1

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What ESAT score do you need for an offer at Christ's?
There is no such score. Cambridge publishes no ESAT threshold, and Christ's has never stated a minimum of its own. What can be said is what happened in the 2025 cycle: applicants who received an offer at this college averaged 7.05 on Mathematics 1, 6.6 on Physics and 6.42 on Mathematics 2, while the lowest scores within that same group were 4.2, 5.2 and 4.4 and the highest on every module was 9. Offers went both to candidates at the top of the scale and to candidates in the low fours, which is not what a score threshold looks like.
Christ's ranks 2nd on Mathematics 1. Is it a college with especially high maths scores?
On this data Christ's high point is concentrated in one module. Its Mathematics 1 offer average of 7.05 ranks 2nd of the 25 undergraduate colleges, in a pool whose top is 7.08; but Mathematics 2 ranks 8th and Physics 7th, each only a little above the pool median. The accurate description is "high on Mathematics 1", not "highest in maths overall". The FOI response also gives no applicant count per college, so the sample size is unknown and small gaps between colleges should not be over-read.
If Mathematics 1 is the priority, can I do less Physics and Mathematics 2?
Not advisable. All three of Christ's offer averages sit above the pool median, with Physics at 6.6 and Mathematics 2 at 6.42 in 7th and 8th place, and the Physics offer floor of 5.2 is the highest of the three. The 0.63 spread describes an order of priority, not a module to let go. The combined offer average of 6.69 comes from none of the three collapsing.
My Mathematics 1 mocks are under 7.05. Is Christ's still worth applying to?
7.05 is an average, not a line. Christ's 2025 offer-holders actually scored anywhere from 4.2 to 9 on Mathematics 1, and the average simply marks the centre of that band. Remember too that the FOI gives no applicant count, so the sample size is unknown and a few candidates can move a college's average. Using one module average to rule yourself out misreads what this data is. More useful targets are process ones: finishing every module inside the time, and a steadily falling arithmetic-error rate.
