Fitzwilliam College ESAT scores for Cambridge Engineering

In the 2025 admissions cycle, applicants who received an Engineering (H100) offer from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge averaged 6.31 on ESAT Mathematics 1, 6.25 on Physics and 6.21 on Mathematics 2. The three figures sit within 0.1 of one another, and each lies close to the median of the 25 undergraduate colleges: 0.05 below the 6.36 median on Mathematics 1, 0.01 below the 6.22 median on Mathematics 2 and 0.22 below the 6.47 median on Physics, for ranks of 14th, 17th and 14th. What sets Fitzwilliam apart is the applicant side: everyone who applied to the college averaged 5.64, 5.28 and 5.47, and offer-holders sat only 0.67, 0.97 and 0.74 above the field, with all three gaps under 1. These are cycle averages, not entry requirements; Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold of any kind.

These are averages and extremes for applicants and offer-holders at this college in the 2025 Engineering (H100) cycle, not entry requirements; Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold. The FOI response gives no applicant counts per college, so sample sizes are unknown and a handful of candidates can move an average. Ranks are computed within the undergraduate college pool only, and are not comparable with the mature colleges, which admit applicants aged 21 and over. ESAT results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale to one decimal place. Pool ranks, pool medians, the overall three-module averages and the various gaps are calculated by FrontierVUE from the same response; Cambridge publishes no such rankings. What Fitzwilliam's ESAT numbers actually are

The University's official Freedom of Information response FOI-2025-956 lists ESAT scores for Engineering (H100) applicants and offer-holders, college by college, for the 2025 admissions cycle. For Fitzwilliam, the first impression from both columns is flatness: applicant averages of 5.64, 5.28 and 5.47, offer averages of 6.31, 6.25 and 6.21, each set close together, and the distance between the two columns is modest as well. ESAT results are reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale to one decimal place, so every figure below sits on that scale. Both columns are grouped by the college applied to in that cycle, and the University notes that some applicants change college or course part-way through.
Applicant averageApplicant rangeOffer-holder averageOffer-holder range
Mathematics 15.641.6 to 96.313.4 to 9
Physics5.282.2 to 96.253.2 to 9
Mathematics 25.471.2 to 96.213.3 to 8.9

The averages and the lowest and highest scores in the table come line by line from official response FOI-2025-956; the overall three-module averages of 5.46 and 6.26 are calculated by FrontierVUE from that same response. The ranges are the lowest and highest score in each group, not boundaries.

0.1

Spread between the three offer averages, highest on Mathematics 1 and lowest on Mathematics 2

0.67

Mathematics 1 gap from the applicant average of 5.64 to the offer average, the smallest of the three

6.26

Offer average across all three modules (applicants: 5.46)

3.2

Lowest Physics score among offer-holders; all three offer floors sit in the threes

Among offer-holders the lowest scores were 3.4 on Mathematics 1, 3.2 on Physics and 3.3 on Mathematics 2, all three floors in the threes, while the highest scores in the same group were 9, 9 and 8.9. Fitzwilliam's offer ranges that year, in other words, spanned almost the whole scale, with the averages sitting near the pool median. This is still one year and one group of people; a score in the threes may be a single candidate, and none of it is a line drawn anywhere. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold.

How to read these numbers

6.31 is an average, not an entry requirement
It is the average Mathematics 1 score of Fitzwilliam Engineering offer-holders in the 2025 cycle. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold, and no college has published a minimum of its own. Within that same group, actual Mathematics 1 scores run from 3.4 to 9; the average marks the centre of that spread, not its entrance. The accurate phrasing is that offer-holders averaged 6.31 that year, not that 6.31 is what you need.
No applicant counts, so small samples move around
Response FOI-2025-956 gives averages and extremes only, with no applicant count or offer count for any college. Fitzwilliam's three offer averages sit just 0.05, 0.22 and 0.01 from the pool medians; with the sample size unknown, gaps that small should not be read as any settled ordering, and there may be no real difference between 14th and 17th place.
Mature colleges do not belong in the same ranking
Hughes Hall, St Edmund's, Wolfson and Lucy Cavendish admit only applicants aged 21 and over, so their applicant pool is a different population. Every rank on this page is computed inside the undergraduate pool of 25 colleges, which is where Fitzwilliam sits. Ranking across the two pools would be meaningless and is not attempted here.
Some candidates changed college or course mid-cycle
The response notes that some applicants move between colleges or courses during the cycle, with figures grouped by the year of application. The group counted under Fitzwilliam is therefore not necessarily identical to the people who end up reading Engineering there. That does not change the trend, but it does mean these are not an exact roll-call.
One line to hold on to: Fitzwilliam's three offer averages sit within 0.1 of one another, all close to the pool median. What that shape tells you is not to neglect any module; it does not tell you that matching the average is enough. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold of any kind.
To place Fitzwilliam alongside every other college, there is a separate cross-college piece on this site: Cambridge ESAT scores by college, which carries the comparison and the interactive charts for all 29 colleges. This page goes deep on one college and does not repeat that material. FrontierVUE is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the University of Cambridge or any of its colleges.

Versus the pool median on Mathematics 2

0.01 below

Fitzwilliam 6.21 against a pool median of 6.22, all but the median itself

Put together, Fitzwilliam's shape is flat, and flat on two levels. The first is within the offer column: 6.31, 6.25 and 6.21, a spread of 0.1, all three close to the pool median in 14th, 17th and 14th place, with no module standing out and none clearly trailing. The second is between the columns: the applicant averages of 5.64, 5.28 and 5.47 were already respectable, and the offer averages sit only 0.67, 0.97 and 0.74 above them, all three gaps under 1. In other words, the ESAT average opened up comparatively little distance between applicants and offer-holders at Fitzwilliam that cycle, and the offer ranges run from the low threes to 9. That does not mean the ESAT counts for little at Fitzwilliam: the FOI gives no applicant count and nothing on the other parts of the application. All that can be said is that, on averages alone, the test did less separating there that year.

Preparing with Fitzwilliam's shape in mind

The sequence below follows from the shape above. It is not official advice, and not a line anyone has drawn for you. Fitzwilliam's shape is unusual in offering no excuse to favour one module: a spread of 0.1, all three near the median. So the emphasis is not on which module to practise first, but on finding your own weakest one.
01Step one

Split the time three ways

With only 0.1 between Fitzwilliam's three offer averages, start by dividing revision time evenly between Mathematics 1, Physics and Mathematics 2, rather than deciding in advance that one of them can have less.

02Step two

Take your own baseline, module by module

Sit a timed paper from the past paper list at /papers/esat and record accuracy and timing for each module separately. The college's shape cannot help you here; there is no real information between 14th and 17th place, and only your own weak spot can decide where the time goes.

03Step three

Break the weakest module down to topic level

Take the module that came out worst and break it into topics, then drill those topics in the practice centre until it stops dictating the pace of the whole paper. Fitzwilliam's offer ranges run from the low threes to 9, so its offer group contained scores of every kind; your aim should be steadiness, not a particular number.

04Step four

Go back to full timed sittings

Run the modules back to back to rehearse the switches and the time budget, then work through the per-question solutions and error analysis. Fitzwilliam's combined offer average of 6.26 comes from none of the three collapsing; whole-paper rhythm is worth more practice than a peak in any single subject.

Where practice weight goes for Fitzwilliam's profile

Three equal shares, inferred from the 2025 offer-group distribution, not an official requirement

Mathematics 1 (14th, 6.31)Just 0.05 below the 6.36 pool median, with the smallest gap at 0.67
  • Target accuracy and speed, clearing arithmetic slips first
  • File errors by topic, not by which paper they came from
Physics (17th, 6.25)0.22 below the 6.47 pool median, the furthest of the three from its median
  • Make mechanics and circuits collapse-proof before chasing harder items
  • Under timing, leave no half-attempted items
Mathematics 2 (14th, 6.21)Just 0.01 below the 6.22 pool median, all but the median itself
  • Bring algebraic manipulation and function work to a level that no longer slows the paper
  • Keep one mixed set a week so practice does not circle the comfortable types

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What ESAT score do you need for an offer at Fitzwilliam?
There is no such score. Cambridge publishes no ESAT threshold, and Fitzwilliam has never stated a minimum of its own. What can be said is what happened in the 2025 cycle: applicants who received an offer at this college averaged 6.31 on Mathematics 1, 6.25 on Physics and 6.21 on Mathematics 2, while the lowest scores within that same group were 3.4, 3.2 and 3.3 and the highest were 9, 9 and 8.9. Offers went both to candidates at the top of the scale and to candidates in the threes, which is not what a score threshold looks like.
Fitzwilliam sits on the pool median on all three modules. Is it the typical college?
On rank, yes: 14th, 17th and 14th, all three in the middle of the 25 undergraduate colleges, within 0.05, 0.22 and 0.01 of the medians. But what marks Fitzwilliam out is not that. It is the applicant-to-offer gap of 0.67, 0.97 and 0.74, all three gaps under 1, on top of an applicant field that already averaged 5.64, 5.28 and 5.47. The FOI also gives no applicant count per college, so the sample size is unknown and a few places either way in mid-table should not be over-read.
The lowest offer-holder scores are in the threes. Does the ESAT matter less at Fitzwilliam?
That inference does not hold. 3.4, 3.2 and 3.3 are extremes, each possibly a single candidate, and with no applicant count in the FOI there is no way to tell what share of the group they represent. The group's averages of 6.31, 6.25 and 6.21 sit near the pool median, and that is the centre of the distribution. The ESAT is one part of an application, and this response says nothing about the other parts, so "matters less" is a conclusion the data cannot support. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score threshold, and has never said the score can be ignored either.
How should I split time across the three modules for Fitzwilliam?
Evenly. Fitzwilliam's three offer averages span only 0.1, in 14th, 17th and 14th place, and none of them gives a reason to practise it first. Split the time evenly across the three, sit a timed baseline module by module, then tilt the time towards whichever module came out weakest for you. This is a reading of a distribution that already happened, not an official instruction, and you should still reassemble all three under full paper timing.
