01 Cambridge's Official Requirement: Three ESAT Modules Before Interview
Cambridge's official admission tests page (2027 entry) lists the ESAT as the required assessment for Engineering, taken pre-interview, and states plainly: "You must register in advance for this test."

Format. Each ESAT module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every ESAT candidate, and the remaining modules are set by the course you apply to; Cambridge Engineering specifies Mathematics 2 and Physics, so H100 applicants sit three modules in 120 minutes, with each module scored separately on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale.
Two things follow from this wording:
- The ESAT is a hard requirement, not an optional extra: without a score, your application cannot go through the normal selection process.
- Its first job is interview shortlisting. Cambridge publishes no cut-off; the result is weighed together with your academic record and the rest of your application.

02 Key Dates and Registration (China, Hong Kong and Macau)
The ESAT is run by UAT-UK and delivered on computer at Pearson VUE test centres, replacing the NSAA and ENGAA from 2024. Registration goes through the UAT-UK / Pearson VUE system, and Cambridge will not book the test for you.
Key dates for Cambridge 2027 entry (official Cambridge position):
- Test window: 12 to 16 October 2026. October-deadline applicants must take this sitting, and booking closes on 28 September 2026.
- Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on 12 or 13 October 2026.
- Mature applicants in the January round: test window 4 to 8 January 2027, with the January date for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau fixed at 6 January 2027.
Note that under Cambridge's rules, standard October-deadline applicants must use the October sitting; the January window is only for mature applicants in the January round, so do not treat it as a retake. Working backwards from a test date of 12 or 13 October 2026, both booking and preparation need to be settled over the summer.

03 Preparing for the Cambridge H100 ESAT on FrontierVUE
One thing first: no official ESAT past papers exist, because UAT-UK has never released any. The closest official material is the past papers of the ESAT's predecessors, the NSAA and ENGAA. A suggested route:
- Start with the ESAT exam overview to pin down what the three modules cover. For H100 the modules are set by Cambridge (Mathematics 1 + Mathematics 2 + Physics), so there is nothing to choose; if you want to understand how module rules work for other courses, see the module choice guide.
- Train each module on its own terms with the Mathematics 1 guide, the Mathematics 2 guide and the Physics guide; Mathematics 2 builds on Mathematics 1, so leave it for the later stage of your preparation.
- Sit timed full papers in the ESAT practice area, using the NSAA/ENGAA archive papers reorganised into the current modules, build a 27-questions-in-40-minutes rhythm with the time management guide, then rehearse the full experience on a Frontier Original full-format mock.
- In the final stretch, read the scoring guide and the test day guide, and work backwards from 12 October 2026 with the revision plan.

04 Points Specific to a Cambridge H100 Application
- Train all three modules, not just the maths. The H100 combination is Mathematics 1 + Mathematics 2 + Physics, and each module is scored separately on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale. The Physics module is easy to neglect if you only grind maths papers; run all three tracks in parallel.
- Your timeline is earlier than you think. For Cambridge the ESAT is a pre-interview test, so the score already matters at the shortlisting stage. Working backwards from a test date of 12 or 13 October 2026, you should be sitting timed full papers before the end of the summer.
- Booking is entirely your responsibility. Cambridge requires you to register in advance yourself, and booking closes on 28 September 2026, earlier than most applicants expect. Handle it alongside your UCAS application.
- There is no published cut-off, and Colleges differ. Cambridge publishes no ESAT score requirement; officially, Colleges use the result to help decide interview shortlisting and then weigh it with the whole application. Admission runs through individual Colleges, and what is publicly known about how they use scores is collected in the Cambridge College scores guide. Do not plan around a rumoured pass mark.
