Format: the ESAT is run by UAT-UK and delivered on computer by Pearson VUE. Each module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes; Natural Sciences applicants take 3 modules, 120 minutes in total. Each module is reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale. The ESAT replaced the NSAA and ENGAA from 2024.

02 Key Dates and Booking (Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau)
The 2027 entry timeline (per Cambridge's official page):
- Test window: 12 to 16 October 2026. Cambridge applicants in the October deadline round must take this sitting, and booking closes 28 September 2026.
- Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on fixed dates: 12 or 13 October 2026. There is no other choice within the window, so plan travel and school leave around these two days.
- Mature applicants in the January round: window 4 to 8 January 2027; the fixed date for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau in that round is 6 January 2027.
Practical advice for candidates in China: the October sitting comes barely a month after the summer, so finish the bulk of your module practice and full-length timed mocks before September, and do not leave booking until the last days before the 28 September deadline. 03 Preparing for the Cambridge ESAT with FrontierVUE
UAT-UK does not release ESAT past papers, so the quality of your substitute question bank matters more than anything. The ESAT's predecessors are the NSAA and ENGAA, and FrontierVUE has reorganised 31 archive papers from those tests (2015 to 2023) into the current ESAT module structure, alongside 26 mock papers (including Frontier Original full ESAT-format papers): 2,345 questions in total, each with a worked explanation and a Chinese translation. A suggested route:
- Pick your modules first: Mathematics 1 is compulsory; choose the other two from Biology / Chemistry / Physics / Mathematics 2 after reading the module selection guide.

04 Cambridge-Specific Notes: Choosing Modules, Reading Scores
Choosing your modules: for Natural Sciences (BCF0), your two optional modules should track the first-year direction you intend to take at Cambridge and your strongest A Level / IB subjects; a physical route and a biological route point to different combinations, so do not copy someone else's choice. Reading your score: each module is scaled 1.0 to 9.0. Cambridge's official wording gives no per-course cut-off, and any "safe score" circulating online is not official, so do not build your target around one. The only official position is this: Colleges use the ESAT to help shortlist for interview, then weigh it with the whole application at the offer stage. Do not forget registration itself: Cambridge's own wording stresses that you must register in advance. For October-round applicants there is no recovery after 28 September 2026, so book the ESAT at the same time as you submit UCAS.
