01 Imperial's official requirement: the TMUA is compulsory
Imperial's official TMUA page for 2027 entry (imperial.ac.uk) is unambiguous: the TMUA is required for applicants to undergraduate courses in the Department of Computing (including joint Mathematics and Computer Science), the Department of Mathematics, and the Business School's BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science. In the university's own words: "You must take the TMUA if you are applying to our undergraduate courses in: Department of Computing (incl. joint Mathematics and Computer Science), Department of Mathematics, BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science (Business School)".

02 What the TMUA tests: format and scoring
The TMUA is run by UAT-UK and delivered by Pearson VUE. It consists of two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each, 75 minutes per paper and 150 minutes in total. Paper 1 tests applications of mathematical knowledge; Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and logic. Results are reported on a scale of 1.0 to 9.0.

03 Key dates and registration: China, Hong Kong and Macau sittings
For 2027 entry the TMUA has two test windows, and Imperial accepts both: window 1 runs 12 to 16 October 2026, and window 2 runs 4 to 8 January 2027. Candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on fixed dates: 15 to 16 October 2026 in window 1, and 8 January 2027 in window 2. Booking closes on 28 September 2026 for window 1 and 21 December 2026 for window 2. Registration is via UAT-UK / Pearson VUE.
Two rules to keep front of mind:
- Imperial only considers your first TMUA result in each application cycle. If you sit in October and book January as well, the second score will not be used, so treat your first sitting as your only shot.
- Applicants who are also applying to Oxford or Cambridge must take the October sitting.

04 How to prepare with FrontierVUE

- Start with the syllabus guide and the revision plan, working backwards from your October or January sitting.
- Go to the TMUA practice hub and drill full papers under timed conditions, starting with the free past papers and keeping Paper 1 and Paper 2 to 75 minutes each.
- Review your mistakes with the time management and common mistakes guides, paying particular attention to logic and proof in Paper 2.
Because Imperial only uses your first result, mock exams matter more than usual here: rehearse the full 150-minute rhythm before test day rather than experiencing it for the first time in the exam room.
