UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering: ESAT Requirements and Prep (2027 Entry)

Applicants to UCL's undergraduate Electronic and Electrical Engineering degrees for 2027 entry must, per the official UAT-UK 2027 Course List, complete one of three admissions tests: the ESAT, the TARA, or the TMUA. This page focuses on the ESAT route, covering the module requirements for both BEng (H600) and MEng (H601), the fixed test dates for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, and a practical preparation plan.

01 UCL's Official Requirement: Two Courses, One Policy

UCL's undergraduate Electronic and Electrical Engineering courses are listed in the official UAT-UK 2027 Entry Course List with an admissions test requirement. The official wording is that "either the ESAT, the TARA, or the TMUA is compulsory": you must complete one of the three tests. On the ESAT route, BEng (H600) and MEng (H601) share exactly the same requirement.

BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering

UCAS code H600

Compulsory: one of the ESAT / TARA / TMUA

MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering

UCAS code H601

Compulsory: one of the ESAT / TARA / TMUA, under the same official policy as H600

ESAT modules for H600 and H601 (identical)

Mathematics 1, plus any two of Biology / Chemistry / Physics / Mathematics 2

The two courses carry identical admissions-test requirements

Official wording: either the ESAT, the TARA, or the TMUA is compulsory

This page follows the officially published UAT-UK 2027 Entry Course List (PDF); before submitting your application, double-check the latest requirements on UCL's own website. BEng (H600) and MEng (H601) carry identical admissions-test requirements, so your course choice does not change your ESAT preparation.

02 Choosing Your Modules: Mathematics 1 Plus Two

Each ESAT module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every ESAT candidate; for UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering (H600/H601) you then pick any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics 2, sitting three modules for 120 minutes in total. Each module is scored separately on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale.

  • Physics
  • Mathematics 2

Any two-module combination is valid under the official policy. If you are unsure, Physics plus Mathematics 2 maps most directly onto an engineering background and is worth considering first, but that is our suggestion, not a rule: every combination is equally valid officially.

03 Key Dates and Registration: Sittings for China, Hong Kong, and Macau

The ESAT is run by UAT-UK and delivered as a computer-based test by Pearson VUE. It replaced the NSAA and ENGAA from 2024. For 2027 entry, candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau have two fixed sitting windows, with booking deadlines set by UAT-UK's official schedule.

04 How to Prepare with FrontierVue

UAT-UK does not release past ESAT papers, so no "official ESAT past papers" exist anywhere. The closest practice material comes from the predecessor tests: FrontierVue hosts 31 archive papers from the NSAA and ENGAA (2015 to 2023), reorganised to match the current ESAT module structure, plus 26 mock papers including Frontier Original sets built in the full ESAT format.

For the three-module combination UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering (H600/H601) requires, a workable path:
01Step 1

Start with the whole test, and your own starting point

Start at the ESAT exam overview to understand the test and gauge your starting point.
02Step 2

Set your pace, then drill speed

Use the revision plan guide to set your pace up to test day, and the time management guide to drill the 27-questions-in-40-minutes rhythm.
03Step 3

Timed sets in your chosen modules, then full-format mocks

Head to the ESAT practice hub, begin with the free archive papers, work through timed sets in your chosen modules, then finish with full-format mocks.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the ESAT compulsory for UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering (H600/H601)?
Per the official UAT-UK 2027 Course List, both BEng (H600) and MEng (H601) Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL require one of three tests: the ESAT, the TARA, or the TMUA. The requirement is compulsory and identical for both courses, so choosing BEng or MEng does not change what you sit.
Which ESAT modules does UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering require?
Mathematics 1 is compulsory, plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics 2, for three modules in total. Each module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, so the full sitting is 120 minutes, and each module is scored separately on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale.
I am sitting in mainland China and applying to UCL H600 for 2027 entry. When is the ESAT?
For 2027 entry, candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau have fixed dates: 12 to 13 October 2026, or 6 January 2027. The UAT-UK 2027 Course List lists no single-sitting restriction for UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering, so pick the window that fits your application timeline; the October sitting returns results earlier.
Are there official ESAT past papers, and what should I practise for UCL?
No: UAT-UK has never released ESAT past papers. The closest material is the archive of the predecessor NSAA and ENGAA tests: FrontierVue hosts 31 archive papers (2015 to 2023) reorganised to the current modules, plus 26 mock papers, totalling 2,345 questions with explanations and Chinese translations, and the two most recent archive papers are free.

FrontierVUE is an independent practice platform. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by UAT-UK, Pearson, OCR, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, or any official admissions-test owner.
