Cambridge Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology: ESAT Guide

Every applicant to Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge for 2027 entry must sit the ESAT admissions test before interview. The course (UCAS code H810, BA/MEng) uses the test in two stages: Colleges draw on the result when deciding whom to shortlist for interview, then weigh it alongside the rest of the application at the offer stage. This page covers the official module requirements, the key dates for candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and how to prepare with FrontierVUE's archive and mock papers.

01 Official Cambridge Requirements and Module Choice

The official Cambridge admission tests page (2027 entry) lists the ESAT as compulsory for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and states plainly that you must register in advance for the test. The score is used in two stages: Colleges first draw on it to help decide interview shortlisting, then consider it alongside the rest of the application when making offer decisions.

Note that Biology appears on the optional-module list for this course: beyond the compulsory Mathematics 1, you pick any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2. Candidates drawn to the biotechnology side of the course, and strongest in biology, can build a three-module combination that plays to those strengths.

03 How to Prepare for the H810 ESAT with FrontierVUE

One fact to get straight first: the ESAT replaced the NSAA and ENGAA from 2024, and no official ESAT past papers have ever been released. Any material sold as official ESAT past papers is not what it claims to be. The reliable route is to train on archive papers from the predecessor tests plus well-built mocks.

31

NSAA/ENGAA archive papers (2015 to 2023, reorganised into the current ESAT module structure)

26

Mock papers, including Frontier Original sets built in the full ESAT format

2,345

Questions, each with a worked explanation and a Chinese translation

That is what FrontierVUE currently offers, with the figures reconciled against the production database in August 2026, and the two most recent archive sets free to try. Start practising at the ESAT practice hub, and see the ESAT exam page for a full overview. A suggested route:
01Step 1

Settle your two optional modules

Read the module choice guide first, and settle the two modules beyond Mathematics 1 from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2.
02Step 2

Work through the guides for your modules

Study the guide for each module you will sit: there is one each for Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
03Step 3

Build the schedule, drill the pace

Use the revision plan guide to map out a schedule running to mid-October 2026, and the time management guide to drill the 27-questions-in-40-minutes rhythm.
04Step 4

Final week: run through the process

In the final week, read the scoring guide and the test day guide so nothing about the process is a surprise.

04 Cambridge-Specific Points to Watch

The score starts working before the interview. Cambridge's official wording is that Colleges use the ESAT result to help decide interview shortlisting, which means an H810 applicant's preparation must be finished before the October 2026 window. There is no route of securing an interview first and improving the score later.
No published cut-off. The official Cambridge page describes the score's role in shortlisting and in holistic offer decisions, and gives no fixed score thresholds; each module is reported on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale. For College-by-College context, see the Cambridge College scores guide.
Module choice is a strategic decision. Biology sits on the optional list for Cambridge Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (H810), which makes it worth serious consideration for applicants drawn to the biotechnology side. Whichever two modules you pick, all three are taken in one continuous 120-minute sitting, so practise full papers at exam pace rather than isolated modules.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which ESAT modules does Cambridge Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (H810) require?
Mathematics 1 is compulsory, and you choose any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2, making three modules in total. Each module has 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, for a 120-minute sitting, and each module is scored on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale.
I am applying to Cambridge H810 from mainland China. When do I sit the ESAT?
October-deadline applicants must take the October 2026 sitting: candidates in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau sit on 12 or 13 October 2026, and booking closes on 28 September 2026. Only mature applicants in the January round use the January 2027 sitting (4 to 8 January, with 6 January 2027 as the fixed date for mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau).
Are there official ESAT past papers, and how do I prepare for Cambridge ChemEng without them?
No. Since the ESAT replaced the NSAA and ENGAA in 2024, no official past papers have been released. The reliable approach is to train on archive papers from the predecessor tests: FrontierVUE offers 31 NSAA/ENGAA archive papers reorganised into the current ESAT modules plus 26 mock papers (including full-format Frontier Original sets), 2,345 questions in all, each with an explanation and Chinese translation, and the two most recent archive sets are free to try.
Is there an ESAT cut-off score for Cambridge H810?
Cambridge publishes no fixed cut-off. The official position is that Colleges use the ESAT result to help decide interview shortlisting, then weigh it alongside the whole application at the offer stage. Each module is scored on a 1.0 to 9.0 scale, and FrontierVUE's Cambridge College scores guide collects the available College-level context.
